ALABAMA FIREFIGHTER RESPONDS TO FIRE AT HIS HOME By: Brieann Rich
Alabama NY: The Alabama Fire Department responded, along with Oakfield
Fire Department, to a reported structure fire at 2320 Judge Road Alabama NY,
the residence of veteran firefighter David Kinney, around 9:30am on Monday,
October 12th 2009. Kinney was at work when the 911 call came in. “He
responded from work and helped us fight the fire,” Alabama Fire Chief Bill
Schutt said.
According to Chief Schutt, Kinney’s two kids, his niece and nephew were
home at the time of the fire. All four made it safely out of the house. The
Alabama and Oakfield Fire Departments were first to arrive on scene and
found heavy smoke pouring from the rear of the building. East Pembroke and
Batavia City Fire Departments responded to provide mutual aid assistance.
The Barre Fire Department, from Orleans County, was requested to fill in the
Alabama Fire station during the incident.
According to Chief Schutt, an electrical cord that was run from a window
to the garage was the possible cause of the fire, igniting the window frame
and the vinyl siding. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and
ventilated the smoke and heat from the house. Genesee County Emergency
Management Coordinator Tim Yaeger was on scene to oversee the operations.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputies and New York State Police were also on
scene. State Route 63 was closed to through traffic for about two hours
during the firefighting and mop-up operations.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

We will be again soliciting F.D.'s for the following items for the
Wounded Warrior Program at Walter Reed Medical Center. Wounded vets are sent
back from forward operating bases with little to no clothing, and lack basic
necessities to complete their recovery after being injured in the line of
duty defending our nation and providing us the chance to do our life's
calling as firefighters. Gunnery Sergeant (ret.) James Lechner of the Chili
F.D. will be hand delivering these care packages on November 13th - just in
time for Thanksgiving. The veterans are huge supporters of the fire service
and would appreciate any station wear garb and swag you can muster. I will
arrange pickup or drop off of any donated items.
We will be delivering the care packages to Walter Reed the weekend of
Nov. 13 -14.
Items needed for the wounded warriors and their supporting families are:
a. fire dept. t-shirts, sweatshirts, knit hats and jackets, shorts
b. adult and child's jackets, hats, gloves and scarves
c. towels and wash cloths
d. toilet articles
NOTE: The reason for adult and child's winter clothing is that many of
the families live in the south and southwest and arrive at Walter Reed
without winter clothing, in their rush to support their loved ones.
Lets give them some comfort and our thanks.

needed for freeing trapped victims from auto accidents. Practicing these
techniques enables the firefighters to act quickly and efficiently on
accident scenes to free the victims as quickly and safely as possible.

Reports of a car on fire sent firefighters to 4 West Avenue in LeRoy this
evening. First arriving Chief Tom Wood reported smoke issuing from a 2000
Pontiac Grand Prix GT.
The tow truck operator was preparing to tow the car from recycling, and
heard a loud "pop". The driver said the he was familiar with the "sound of a
GM fire". He attempted to extinguish the fire but was unable to open the
hood.
Engine 63 arrived and stretched an attack line and a back up line and had
the fire under control in less than ten minutes. Assistant Chief Bill Wood
said there "are tons of concerns" when responding to this occupancy. There
are "hundreds of cars parked next to each other, along with difficult access
after hours".

On May 21st, the LeRoy Fire District was dispatched at just after
midnight this morning for house fire. First arriving chiefs and law
enforcement officers found heavy fire from the A side of the two story, with
everyone out of the structure. Cries to save the house could be heard down
the dark street from the distressed homeowner over the crackling of the fire
and the chatter on the radios. Engine 63 arrived and stretched two attack
lines while Quint 65 laddered the building and began ventilation efforts.
These efforts resulted in a quick knockdown and contained the fire to the
front of the dwelling, although heavy smoke conditions were evident
throughout the structure.

A FAST team was summoned from the Town of Batavia, while mutual aid was
requested from Pavilion, Caledonia, and Bergen. The Stafford F.D. filled in
at LFD. One firefighter was treated and transported for minor injuries to
UMMC by Batavia Paramedics. Three civilians were transported by LeRoy
Paramedics to Strong Memorial, one of them with second and third degree
burns sustained while attempting to retrieve possessions from inside the
dwelling.
The Genesee County Emergency Management Office and the Genesee County
Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Rural Fire Department needs your vote to win new fire engine from
E-One
Last fall the Newstead NY Volunteer Fire Company donated a used fire engine
to a struggling rural volunteer fire department in Oneida, Kentucky . It was
a team effort with a lot of help of some more good folks from the First
Baptist Church in Vandalia, Ohio and a group started by local Erie County
firefighters known as Hancock Hope, formed for the sole purpose of helping
other firefighters and fire departments in need.
That donated 1986 fire engine has served them well for the past six
months. One of the church members, Michael Whitby – a young, energetic EMT
himself; took it upon himself to do the right thing and nominated Oneida FD
in a contest to win a brand new fire engine from E-One Fire Apparatus.
Michael made a compelling argument as to why this small, impoverished fire
company - so much that E-One has chosen Oneida as one of seven finalists.
Here’s where you come in. To move Oneida from the “Final Seven” to the
winners circle requires that you – and everyone you know – act now and go to
E-One’s web site to vote for Oneida’s story as the best story.
To vote for Oneida’s story, click:
http://www.e-one.com/news/eone-stories/vote-for-the-best-story.htm?id=651
.
IMPORTANT: To confirm your vote, you must reply to an e-mail that E-One will
send you after you’ve cast your ballot.
Voting ends at 1:00 p.m. on April 24th and the winner will be announced at
3:00 p.m. on the FDIC show floor in E-ONE’s booth - #9104 Lucas Oil Stadium.
It doesn’t cost you anything but a few moments of your time. Your vote
could mean a world of difference to a small fire department with a big
heart. Now it’s your turn to “Do the Right Thing.”

LeRoy, NY - The LeRoy F.D. responded to it's third brush fire in 2 days
this afternoon near the corner of West Bergen Road and Griswold Road. Chief
Wood reported that about an acre of property was consumed by the fire.
Reports from a neighbor say that the resident started a pile of refuse on
fire with gasoline on a windy day. The neighbor nearly lost his shed and a
tractor if the fire was not halted by the fire department.
Assistant Chief Sheflin said that yesterday's fire that involved 13 fire
companies from the three counties and took five hours to control were both
the result of careless "controlled burns". "People need to think about the
weather conditions when burning leaves and such", said Sheflin.

The plan was to conduct training on the new ATV apparatus on the evening
of 03/24, the drill to begin at 7:00 PM at the Brockport Fire Station.
However, when Morton was dispatched to a large grass fire and requested mutual
aid from Brockport, just before 6:00 PM, Chief Scott Smith directed the crew,
about to leave with the squad, to hook-up the ATV trailer to respond along with
the squad. Both pieces of equipment have grass & brush firefighting capability.
The decision was a good one because upon arrival, it was determined that wet
fields were going to prevent the use of the heavier squads of Brockport and
Hilton for this assignment. It was no problem however, for Brockport’s “almost
in-service” new 2347. While most of the fire was suppressed, the Brockport rig
circled the entire burn area wetting down any hot spots ensuring there would not
be a rekindle. The multi-purpose apparatus proved itself early-on as an
excellent grass & brush vehicle. It will surely prove itself in many more
applications for Brockport, and surrounding fire departments, at future off-the
road EMS and fire incidents. When asked if other Brockport Firefighters would be
able to operate the new apparatus, Chief Smith replied that might be the case,
but not on the first run! He pointed out that the initial training session had
not taken place, although it was probably already underway and would continue
with hands-on training as soon as the rig returned to Brockport from the Morton
incident.

STORY UPDATED & PHOTOS ADDED 2/9
On Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 14:01 hours, The City of Batavia Medics called on scene
for a medical call involving ice falling from a roof at Ramada Limited on Park
Road causing injury to a person.
Upon arrival, the medics requested a response from the Town of Batavia Fire
Department to assist them with removing a large piece of ice from the victim.
Town of Batavia 254, 2nd Assistant Chief Dan Coffey arrived and requested Engine
21 to expedite their response. Deputy Chief Paul Barrett, 1st Assistant Chief
Randy McIntire and Chief Bob Hunt arrived and requested HR-20 to respond with
High pressure air bags and additional rescue equipment. The ice was estimated to
weigh approximately 2800 pounds.
The victim was trapped under an estimated 2' x 2' x 15" solid pillar of ice
laying horizontally across the victims lower leg. Bystanders were attempting to
break through the ice with a hammer and prybar.
It was determined that the rescue would be done using the HIGH pressure air
bags. FF Chris Long, used a shovel to remove the mud from under a portion of the
ice adjacent to the victim's foot and the ice was cribbed to prevent it from
rolling onto the victim. The air bag was placed underneath the ice in the
excavated area and inflated. Fire fighters continued to crib as the ice was
lifted and the victim was finally pulled to safety. The victim was removed to an
awaiting City of Batavia ALS ambulance and transported.

At 3:03 am on Saturday, January 17th, Shelby Fire was dispatched to a
structure fire at 11084 Maple Ridge Road. First pumper on location Shelby 32
reported flames showing from the rear of the house. Immediately Shelby 1
requested a pumper and manpower from East Shelby, Ladder and manpower from
Medina and Fast team from Lyndonville. Chief Fearby took command and Chief
Zinkevich was operations. The first interior attack resulted in a May Day due to
a partial collapse of a roof. All 3 firefighters involved in this escaped injury
at this time we switched to an exterior attack only. Shelby 32 was moved from
the driveway to utilize Medina 40. At this time Shelby 32 froze and was replace
by Medina 11. Ridgeway was called in for a pumper and manpower, Alabama to stand
by in Station 1 and Oakfield at Station 2. National Grid was called to the scene
for live wire that had fallen across the driveway which hampered operations.
Middleport was called for a pumper and manpower at the same time Orleans 4
requested Middleport's rescue to the scene. Frozen hydrants lead us to a tanker
relay. At this time tankers were requested from: Barker, Wolcotsville, Alabama,
East Shelby, Ridgeway and Lyndonville. Medina and Middleport both had rehab
stations set up. At 4:17 am Albion and Barre were called in for extra manpower
to relieve firefighters due to the cold temperatures. At 5:46 Albion's ladder
was called to the scene from Medina's hall. When they arrived all the tankers
were sent to the Town of Shelby buildings to be put inside.
Wyoming Correctional was called in to help with hose detail and Lyons
Collision to transport the frozen hose to Ridgeway to thaw.
The fire had a substantial start upon arrival amongst several other issues
that arose; the cold, the water problems and the live wires that had fallen
across the driveway.
Our compliments go out to Dispatch and all companies involved utilized or
standby.
Tim Fearby would like to personally thank the Medina Police Dept., Orleans
County. & companies, Genesee County & companies, Niagara County & companies
involved.

The Alexander Fire Dept. has recently completed the snow track upgrade to our
John Deere Gator and it is now in service. A Stokes basket and medic seat, which
can be quickly removed to transport gear, are incorporated in the Gator's EMS
bed. We tested it in 12" powdered snow and had good results. The tracks will be
seasonal and the tires will be reinstalled in the Spring. We would like to thank
Senator Mary Lou Rath for funding assistance.
